Typography plays a central role in how I think and act as a designer, it has helped me to create an attention to detail while also offering the unique challenge of creating character in the most familiar of forms.
LEGACY WAKES is a typeface design inspired by stone carved lettering created over one hundred years ago on a headstone in the Kiltane graveyard in North Mayo, Ireland.
The design process involved making clay castings from old headstones. By physically seeing and feeling the shapes carved over one hundred years ago I gained a greater understanding and appreciation for the original physical letter forms. I digitally refined selected elements of the original design to create simple angular and curved terminals together with low crotch’s and triangular cross strokes. The final design transforms a one hundred year old carving into a contemporary type design.
