Bog Stool is a stool design experiment using bog/peat as a design material. Inspired by Hedge Furniture which is an old Irish form of making furniture from found wood in a forest.
The design process involved visiting the National Museum of Ireland, Country Life in Turlough, Castlebar, Mayo and seeing original examples of Hedge Furniture made hundreds of years ago in Ireland. It was a process used by poorer people who could not afford to buy furniture or didn’t have access to buying it.
I visited crafts people who still use the tradition and walked through a forest collecting pieces of wood that resembled legs and backs of chairs and constructing them into pieces of furniture. The end result is a contemporary take on the concept of Hedge Furniture.
